Buying welders

Is it worth buying used handheld laser welders?

Quick answer

Used handheld laser welders can be strong value at 40–60% of new price if the machine powers on, strikes an arc at rated amps and the seller is upgrading (not dumping). Avoid ex-site abuse: cracked cases, smoke residue and missing panels are the tells of a machine near death.

Used-buying inspection

  • Power on, fan runs, no error codes
  • Strike a test arc at ~half and near-max output
  • Inspect torch/leads for damage and DIY repairs
  • Ask why it's for sale — upgrades are fine, 'just cleaning up' is not
  • Check consumable availability for that model before you buy

Depreciation logic

Quality inverters hold value surprisingly well in Australia — a $1,300 trade MIG resells around $600–$800 for years. That cuts both ways: used bargains on good machines are rare, and used bargains on cheap machines aren't bargains.
