Laser — strengths and trade-offs
Handheld laser welding (fiber laser welding): a fiber laser beam melts a narrow, deep seam — 3–5x faster than TIG with minimal heat input and almost no cleanup. Best for production speed, stainless benches, sheet metal. Gas: nitrogen or argon at 15–25 L/min. Difficulty: the easiest process to produce clean beads with — but the most dangerous to eyes.
- No rated laser safety eyewear for the exact wavelength — regular welding helmets do NOT block 1064–1080 nm
- Skipping the focal/protective lens check — spatter destroys optics fast
- Expecting them to weld thick structural steel: most handhelds are comfortable to ~4–6 mm
MIG — strengths and trade-offs
MIG welding (GMAW — Gas Metal Arc Welding): a continuously fed wire electrode melts into the weld pool under an argon-CO2 shield. Best for beginners, speed, sheet steel. Gas: an argon-CO2 mix (Argoshield-family) or 100% CO2. Difficulty: the easiest process to learn.
- Stick-out too long — keep 8–10 mm from nozzle to work for a stable arc
- Travel too slow on thin sheet, burning holes instead of building a bead
- Wrong wire size for the job — 0.9 mm covers most hobby work in Australia
