Basics & process choice
How long does it take to learn welding?
Quick answer
MIG competence on basic steel joints takes 10–20 hours of practice; genuine proficiency across positions and thicknesses, a few months of regular work. TIG competence takes months of deliberate practice. Trade-level skill is a 3–4 year apprenticeship — but hobby-useful ability comes fast.
The realistic ladder

| Useful hobby | 15–25 h | build gates, racks, repairs |
| Proficient | 100+ h | positions, thin sheet, ally basics |
| Trade standard | apprenticeship | anything, inspected, to code |
