What is AS/NZS 1554 and does it matter to me?

AS/NZS 1554 is the Australian/New Zealand structural steel welding standard — the rulebook for welds in buildings and structures, covering categories GP (general), SP (structural) and categories for stainless and reinforcing steel. It matters if you weld anything structural someone else relies on; it doesn't govern your home gate.
What it controls
- Weld categories: GP for general fabrication, SP for higher structural demands
- Who can weld: certified welders under qualified supervision (AS 2214 supervisors)
- How procedures are qualified and inspected
- Consumable and process requirements for each category
The hobby boundary
Your own gate, trailer repairs on private gear, art — your call. A trailer that goes on the road, a mezzanine someone stands under, anything engineered: that's AS/NZS 1554 territory, and 'a mate who welds' isn't the standard's idea of a qualified welder.
