What PPE do you need for welding?

Quick answer

Minimum welding PPE: an Australian Standards auto-darkening helmet (ASNZS 1338), leather gloves, flame-resistant clothing (no synthetics), steel-capped boots and enclosed workshop ventilation. Add a P2 respirator for fume-heavy work like galvanised, stainless or aluminium welding.

The kit, item by item

  • Helmet: auto-darkening, ASNZS 1338-rated, shade 9–13 (13 for high-amp stick)
  • Gloves: leather TIG-gauntlets or MIG mitts — no fingerless shortcuts
  • Clothing: FR cotton/leather; synthetics melt into skin
  • Boots: steel cap, no laces exposed to spatter (or spats)
  • Respirator: P2 minimum for fume; powered air (PAPR) for daily work
  • Screens: protect others from arc flash — bystanders get welded retinas too

The Australian standard of care

AS 1674 series covers welding safety practice; WHS law makes PCBUs responsible for fume and flash management. Practically: extract the fume at the arc, shield the flash, and treat any 'arc eye' (gritty, painful eyes at 3am) as a free lesson rather than a tradition.
