Why do welders drink milk after welding?

Milk does nothing to protect you from welding fume — that's a myth with no clinical basis. It dates from the idea that calcium 'binds' toxins. The real fix for fume exposure, including zinc from galvanised steel, is ventilation, extraction and the right respirator — not a milk carton.

Where the myth comes from

Old boilermakers swore by milk to take the edge off 'metal fume fever' — the flu-like illness from welding galvanised steel. Zinc oxide fume genuinely causes it; calcium genuinely doesn't treat or prevent it. The placebo and the timing (symptoms pass in a day or two regardless) kept the myth alive for decades.

What actually protects you

  • Local fume extraction at the arc — the single biggest upgrade a home workshop can make
  • A fitted P2 respirator (or powered air for daily work) under the helmet
  • Weld outdoors or with cross-ventilation when extraction isn't available
  • Grind the galvanising off the weld zone where practical — the cheapest control of all
