Basics & process choice

What should a beginner weld first?

Quick answer

A beginner should weld beads on flat scrap plate first — 30 minutes of straight beads before any joint. Then butt joints, then T-joints, then the first real project: a welding cart. It teaches flat, square and fit-up while building something you'll use every session.

The progression

  • Session 1–2: beads on flat plate — consistency over beauty
  • Session 3–4: butt joints with tacks
  • Session 5–6: T-joints/fillets — the structural default
  • Project 1: welding cart for your own machine
  • Project 2: fire pit or camp stand — thicker material, longer seams
