Which stick rods should I buy?
Quick answer
Buy 2.6 mm general-purpose rods (E4813/Australian 'general purpose' class) for learning and thin work, and 3.2 mm low-hydrogen-style rods for structural thicknesses. Rod economics are friendly: a 5 kg packet covers most hobby projects for a year.
Rod selection
| Rod | Best for |
|---|---|
| 2.0 mm | thin steel ~2 mm, first arcs |
| 2.6 mm | 3–5 mm general repairs — the learner default |
| 3.2 mm | 6 mm+ structural work |
| 4.0 mm+ | thick plate, high deposition |
Storage
Rods hate moisture: damp flux causes porous welds and hydrogen cracking on critical work. Store packets sealed, off concrete; bake suspect rods per the manufacturer's instructions before structural use.
